Nunes told reporters he was not aware of the plans, according to his office

(CNN) White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday that it was “unfortunate” that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes attended an intelligence briefing over the weekend and allegedly read classified information that he did not have access to.

“It is a little bit unfortunate that some people are trying to politicize what he did,” Sanders told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer in a separate interview. “I have no idea why that would be unfortunate. It’s a shame that people are trying to politicize this.”

Nunes told reporters Monday that he met with intelligence officials about information related to the unsubstantiated investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. He told reporters he was not aware of the plan or that the meeting was held over the weekend.

But when a reporter later asked Nunes, “Were you aware that top Trump campaign officials were being monitored and surveilled as they’re saying by intelligence officials in the upper echelon of the intelligence community? Were you aware of that?”

In the interview Tuesday, Sanders noted that the Nunes didn’t have access to that information, and that he later briefed Trump before doing so.
